What is a Registered Piano Technician?

Registered Piano Technicians are professionals who have committed themselves to the continual pursuit of excellence, both in technical service and ethical conduct. The Piano Technicians Guild grants the Registered Piano Technician (RPT) credential after a series of rigorous examinations that test skill in piano tuning, regulation and repair. Those capable of performing these tasks up to a recognized worldwide standard receive the RPT credential.

Some Basic Information

Wood and metal expand and contract as the temperature and humidty variy from season to season and with the use of heaters in the winter and air-conditioners, and coolers in the summer. These changes can dramatically affect a piano's tuning.

To preserve the quality of sound from your piano, it is recommended that your piano is professionally tuned twice a year.

Even a piano that sits idle for long periods of time shoud be tuned at least once every 18-24 months to avoid damage to the bridges and soundboard when the pitch drops and there is not enough downward pressure from the strings.

Pianos that go untuned for long periods of time may require several tunings before they stabilize at concert pitch.

Your piano is a major investment.
Protect it and enjoy it ... keep it in tune.
